Additional Guidance for International Students

  • Get a Social Security Number (SSN): Required if you plan to work in the U.S. or participate in programs like Match. Apply early to avoid delays.
  • Open a U.S. Bank Account: Most banks require an SSN or ITIN, student visa, proof of U.S. residency, and two forms of ID. Some banks may accept visa information instead.
  • Private Educational Loans: Check lender requirements for SSN or ITIN. Some lenders accept ITIN in place of SSN. Begin the application process early if needed.
  • Build U.S. Credit History: Consider requesting a credit card from your bank. You can check your credit report at annualcreditreport.com if you have an SSN.

Federal loans are not available to non-US citizens other than private loans. You may want to research scholarships:

Contact Financial Aid: For questions about financial wellness or loan options, reach out to the SMHS Office of Financial Aid.
