Federal Student Loan Counseling

Entrance Counseling

The GW SMHS MD Program Financial Aid Office participates in the Federal Direct Loan Program. Federal Direct Loans, including Unsubsidized Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans, are made through the U.S. Department of Education.

Federal regulations require the university to counsel each loan recipient as to their Rights and Responsibilities as a borrower. This is completed through online counseling on the Department of Education's main loan information website, studentaid.gov. You must complete entrance counseling before the university can make the first loan disbursement to the school on your behalf. A combined entrance counseling session is required for borrowers of Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans.

Exit Counseling

If you borrowed loans through the Federal Direct Loan Program (Unsubsidized Loans or Graduate PLUS Loans) while attending the medical school, you are required by law to participate in exit counseling if you are graduating, withdrawing, or dropping below half-time enrollment. To satisfy the online exit counseling requirement, go to studentaid.gov.

In order for the GW MD Program Office of Financial Aid to be notified that you have completed online exit counseling, be sure the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (E00197 or 001444-03) is listed as your current school of attendance. You will be asked this question after you have completed and passed the exit counseling quiz.
